I have to admit an online post that I saw recently caught me off guard. The other day I was browsing around the social media world and saw a post talking about AI. Well I didn’t think much of it because it seems like “AI” is all anybody ever talks about these days! But this time it kind of hit home!
How Can AI Count What We Can’t?
Counting thousands of tiny objects manually by hand is brutal. But what if your phone could do it for you in a couple of seconds? AI-powered machine vision is transforming inventory management, eliminating errors, and saving countless hours! The ad then mentions many of the same benefits that we’re always mentioning every time that we talk about a parts counting scale. You know, things like: a fast and accurate count. User friendly interface. Cost effectiveness. Increase your inventory efficiency.
Do You Trust AI to Count Inventory Parts for You?
Of course we offer electronic parts counting scales which allow customers to easily count parts very quickly. There is some work involved like taking a sample count or placing the bin on/off the scale platform, but otherwise it is pretty simple and it does speed up your overall parts counting. And, it also increases the accuracy over hand counting.
But what if you could just whip your smartphone out and take a picture of a bin of parts and then ta-da, you now have your total count without doing hardly any work at all? That would be remarkable.
That would be amazing if it truly could do that. Might not be great for our business, but I’m not sure that AI is quite capable of seeing through layers and layers of parts inside a bin to obtain a precise count. Either way, it’s an interesting topic and honestly one that I hadn’t thought much about until today.
So thinking about will AI replace the electronic counting scale question, this might be a small glimpse into the future of parts counting scales. Perhaps years from now scale users will simply place a handful of pieces on the scale, automatically take a picture of the pieces, and the scale with some AI assistance, will automatically determine how many pieces were placed on the scale platter and determine the average piece weight with no hand counting involved at all.
As always, we encourage you to contact us for any counting scale questions and buying advice. We’ve been providing these to customers for many years and we know a lot about parts counting.
